Speyer Varsity Volleyball Defends their Title as the AIPSL Champions!
Speyer's Varsity Volleyball team won the AIPSL B Division Volleyball Championship...again! We are so proud of them and have all of the details of the thrilling final regular season games and the tournament below!
Last Thursday, the Varsity Volleyball team faced off against Heschel in their final game of the regular season. Speyer came out strong, communicating for free balls, connecting on their passes, and keeping their space. The Dragons also displayed excellent defense, returning serves and digging the ball many times. In the first set, each team took turns taking the lead, but Speyer ended up on top 25-12!
In the second set, Speyer came out hot with their serves helping them jump out to a 9-0 lead. Speyer did not look back and rode this momentum the entire set. Their energy was high, the Dragons were supporting one another, and this led to some excellent points and rallies. Speyer won the second set 25-12 and won the match 2-0. This concluded an undefeated season in league play, giving the Dragons the #1 seed heading into the post season.
This Wednesday, the Dragons began their quest to repeat as AIPSL Champions by competing against Gaynor in the semifinals. Speyer came out energetic, communicating and having nice placement on their serves. Despite our energy, the score was back and forth for the entire set and Gaynor was able to pull away in the end, winning the first set 25-21. The Dragons refocused during the second set and jumped out to an early lead thanks to consecutive aces. Speyer rode this momentum throughout the entire set, passing the ball well, setting each other up for spikes, and making some excellent defensive plays. With this, Speyer won the second set 25-13!
In the third and decisive set, Speyer came out super hot. The Dragons fired off 14 straight aces to jump to a 14-0 lead in the final set (which is only played to 15 points). Speyer gave up a point, but won the third and final set 15-1. With that win, our Dragons were set to move onto the championship match against Avenues!
Yesterday, Speyer traveled to Avenues to vie for the AIPSL B Division Volleyball Championship, hoping to repeat as league champions. Speyer came out strong, showcasing their skill and determination on the court. Their strong serves and coordinated plays kept them ahead and set the stage for an exciting match. Throughout the set, the score was close, and Speyer used their effective communication and positioning to pull away and take the first set 25-18!
In the second set, Avenues fought back and jumped out to an early lead. This forced the Dragons to stay focused and adapt their gameplay. Speyer showed mental toughness throughout the second set to close the gap. The match intensified as both teams exchanged points down the stretch, but the Dragons managed to squeak ahead. Speyer controlled the ball for the last few serves and won the exciting second set 25-22! Their perseverance and teamwork were evident in the close final moments, earning them well-deserved recognition as the league champions and defending their title from last year!
We are so proud of this team and their amazing season! The players showed up to every practice eager to improve their skills and challenge each other. We also want to thank Coach Song and Coach Negouai for their fabulous work with the team! GO DRAGONS!!!!
