Spotted on the Boulevard: our Second Grade Poets!

Words were flying through the Lower School classrooms on Wednesday as our Second Grade Dragons welcomed family members and Speyer teachers and staff to their Poetry Slam! During their unit on poetry, our second graders dove deep into this wonderful form of personal narrative writing.

Challenged with two main guiding questions — How can writers use poetry to speak their truth? and How do poets write about life experiences in interesting and surprising ways? — our students began their exploration by defining, identifying, and studying specific types of poetry (cinquain, list, haiku, simile, sensory, and concrete). Incorporating poetic elements such as sensory language, onomatopoeia, simile, and metaphor, our writers experimented with writing different types of poems and created an anthology of original poems reflecting their personal experiences and identities.

During their Poetry Slam, our Dragons performed three of their poems and celebrated their peers' original works as well! It was a wonderful morning full of creativity and self-expression! Applause all around for our Second Grade writers and their inspiring teaching teams! GO DRAGONS!
