Dragon Dispatch Season Wrap-Up: JV Volleyball, Cross Country, Varsity Soccer, and JV Soccer Celebrate Wonderful Seasons Marked by Teamwork and Fun!
JV Volleyball Wraps Up an Awesome Season!
Our JV Volleyball team traveled to Gaynor for their final match of the season. The Dragons came out strong, connecting on their serves and bumps and performing some excellent digs. The first set was back and forth the entire way, and neither team could get any separation. This led to the set continuing on past 25! Speyer was down 27 to 26, but got the serve back. The Dragon players stepped up and had two consecutive aces, leading Speyer to win the first set 29-27!
In the second set, Gaynor came out with blistering serves that the Dragons were unable to return. Speyer was down a sizable amount early, but refocused and got their bumps and sets over the net to close the gap. Unfortunately, Gaynor pulled away and won the second set 25-12. The third and final set was intense. Both teams were trading points and Speyer was able to string together a few aces and return some of Gaynor’s difficult serves. The score kept bouncing back and forth, but in the end, Gaynor emerged victorious. Speyer was defeated in the set 15-12 and lost the match 2-1.
We are sending high-fives (with fireworks) to all the players for their awesome season. They came to practice each week ready to learn and compete, and their volleyball skills developed tremendously throughout the season. We also give a shout-out to Coach Parraga for her time and dedication to the team!
Cross Country Finishes the Season Strong!
Five fearless Speyer runners hit the trails, charging into the chilly air with excitement and big goals for their final cross country meet of the year! Lloyd D., Willem S., and Theo P. burst off the line at 4:00 PM, full of energy and determination. Lloyd powered his way into the top 50, earning a medal — way to go, Lloyd! Willem and Theo weren’t far behind, crossing the finish line with proud smiles. Then at 4:10 PM, Daisy Y. and Penny K. dashed off with grit and enthusiasm. Penny rocked her very first race with confidence, and both girls finished strong with an all-out sprint to the end. What a way to wrap up the season, Speyer runners!
We want to thank all of our Dragon Cross Country runners for such a great season. They came to each practice with determined effort to improve and challenge themselves. We also send virtual fist bumps to Coach Koralewski and Coach O’Connor for all of their time and effort this season!
Varsity Soccer Wraps up a Great Season of Teamwork!
Speyer's Varsity Soccer season is now complete — a round of applause for these Dragons! Varsity Soccer faced off against a strong Avenues squad. Speyer came out with energy, protecting their defensive half by attacking the ball and deflecting passes. The Speyer goalie made many amazing saves to keep the Dragons within reach...however, Avenues found the back of the net early. Down on the scoreboard, Speyer came out in the second half focused and with fierce tenacity. The Dragons put the score behind them and played their game, connecting on multiple passes. Despite the Dragons strong play, they did not find the back of the net. When the final whistle sounded, Speyer was defeated 6-0.
The team showed tremendous growth, determination, and tenacity in every game. We also want to thank the fifth and sixth graders who played up on the Varsity team for a few of the games. A huge shout-out goes to Coach Renato, who helped develop the team’s soccer and teamwork skills throughout the entire season!
JV Soccer Wraps Up Their Season with Determination and Fun!
JV Soccer traveled to Thomas Jefferson Park to face off against Cathedral in their final game of the season. From the opening minutes, the Dragons did an excellent job of pressuring their opponents. Speyer had possession in the opposing half and had two excellent chances to score but were unable to find the back of the net. Unfortunately, Cathedral was able to connect on some passes and scored on their opportunities. Speyer went into half down 3-0.
In the second half, the Dragons came out aggressive, which opened up numerous moments to score. Halfway through the second half, Speyer was sprinting down the sideline with some nice dribble moves and the defenders were missing. This created an amazing opportunity for our Dragons and our team calmly placed their shot and found the back of the net, putting Speyer on the scoreboard! Speyer rode this momentum the remainder of the game, playing with great energy and effort. When the final whistle sounded, Speyer was defeated 5-1.
High-fives all around to our players for an amazing season! They showed up to practice every day ready to work hard and improve their skills. We also want to give a huge shout-out to Coach Cano for all of his hard work with our Dragons!
We are so proud of everything our Dragons accomplished this season! GO DRAGONS!
